Because teens and adults have different needs we provide separate programs and facilities within the Silver Hill campus so we can focus on the unique requirements of each of these age groups.
Our Center for Adolescents offers treatment for teens, ages 13 – 17, who may be struggling with mood disorders, anxiety disorders and co-occurring self-harming behaviors, eating disorders or substance use disorders. All patients are under the care of a highly motivated and specially trained professional staff committed to enhancing the mental health of teens and families in crisis.
All treatment is provided in a warm, supportive, homelike atmosphere designed to promote healing and recovery. And the level of care the patient receives is tailored to their level of need. From inpatient, to transitional living to intensive outpatient programs, we provide all on one campus.
We work hard at the Center to establish a collaborative relationship with each of our patients, their families and their clinicians in the community. We build on these connections to help each patient and their families achieve a meaningful and lasting life course correction.
Our core values at the Center are:
- Family-centered care
- Integrity and professionalism
- Accountability and transparency
- Safe and positive therapeutic environment
- Scholarly clinical excellence
- Best possible outcome
The conditions we treat at the Center include:
Many of our young patients have more than one diagnosis. These “co-occurring disorders” require a special understanding and corresponding treatment. Co-occurrence may be a combination of a variety of disorders. There may be a combination of depression and substance use, for example, or anxiety combined with an eating disorder.
Because Silver Hill is a true psychiatric hospital, we are uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive care for patients who need treatment for more than one disorder.
Treatment at the Adolescent Center is designed to cooperatively, compassionately and systematically help teens and families in need of care. Treatment is overseen by a board-certified adolescent psychiatrist and begins with a diagnostic assessment that forms the basis of a treatment plan. Patient-focused, evidence-based treatment can include:
The cornerstone of treatment in the Center’s transitional living and intensive outpatient programs is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT is a highly-structured form of behavioral therapy that was designed to provide the skills necessary to regulate emotions, control destructive behaviors and improve interpersonal relations. “Dialectical” refers to the integration of opposites, in this case finding balance between acceptance and change. DBT helps you accept distress in life by providing tools to make positive behavioral changes and feel at peace with your reality.
When you come to Silver Hill for treatment, you can expect a safe environment that promotes healing and recovery. We offer three levels of care that correspond with each patient’s level of need.
Adolescents can be admitted to the inpatient unit for crisis management and stabilization.
After this initial phase of treatment, patients can move on to our transitional living program, where they reside on campus in a house that is staffed 24-hours a day with DBT-trained personnel.
The third level of care is intensive outpatient for teens who live at home and come to Silver Hill for therapy led by our DBT specialists.
We want to limit the disruption of academic progress for adolescents during their stay with us. Time is set aside each day for school work under the guidance of a certified teacher. With the family’s permission, our teacher will communicate with professionals at the school. Specialized support for academic areas such as foreign languages, higher level sciences, and advanced placement classes is available from private tutors for an additional fee.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment
