“I help patients to identify lives they find worth living and to leave here with road maps to their future selves.”
As DBT Program Manager in the River House Transitional Living Center for Emotion Management, Denise Kearns, RN, is all about teaching the practical skills that patients can use in their everyday lives to regulate their emotions, avoid destructive behaviors and improve relationships.
“DBT skills,” says Denise, “are specific strategies and techniques that patients learn to help them tolerate the distressful and chaotic moments in their lives without hurting themselves or their relationships .”
The River House program treats patients suffering from depression, bi-polar disorder, substance use disorder, anxiety, self harm and borderline personality disorder. “Our focus,” says Denise, “is to help people be in their lives, tolerate the present moment, and build hope for their future selves.”
Denise says that her special moments come when, at the end of treatment, “a patient smiles, gives me a hearty handshake, looks me in the eye and says that their life has been changed by their experiences at Silver Hill.”
