Irwin Gelman, MD
“I can promise patients that I will do my best to help them to live their lives the way they want to be able to live their lives.”
Dr. Irwin Gelman, M.D., is an attending psychiatrist in the Adult Inpatient Center of Silver Hill Hospital, where medically and psychiatrically ill patients in crisis are first treated.
After a patient’s immediate issues are stabilized, Dr. Gelman begins the process of determining how he and the hospital can best help going forward. “I encourage patients to talk about whatever they think is meaningful, and I let them know that I’m prepared to talk with them for as long as they want to.”
The key to cooperation and progress, Dr. Gelman believes, is “making sure patients understand what we’re trying to do for them. Then, whatever fear or resistance they had to working with us gets better.”
Dr. Gelman is gratified by the commitment and work ethic of his colleagues. “We treat patients together as a team, and the people I work with are highly motivated to help patients, are intelligent and pleasant to be with, and they bring genuine talent to their jobs. It’s gratifying to work with people like that.
