Kathleen Thompson, LCSW
“Patients become more focused on treatment after family dynamics have improved.”
Stabilizing and improving family/patient relationships is the role of Kathleen Thompson, LCSW, in the comprehensive Silver Hill Hospital treatment protocol.
As creator and manager of the four curriculum that make up the Family Programs, Kathleen aims to educate families about the facts of their loved ones’ conditions. “In a caring way we validate their frustration, but we also give them the information that let’s them know that it’s not as easy as patients just saying no or making a simple decision,” Kathleen says.
“Addiction, along with depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder, cannot be conquered by patients just buckling down,” Kathleen explains to families of patients in the Addiction & Co-Occurring Disorders Program. “They are processes that hijack the brain.”
Besides the Addiction class, Kathleen also runs programs for families with patients suffering with eating disorders and persistent psychiatric illnesses. “I tell both our patients and our families to hold on and let go,” Kathleen says. “Hold on to your belief that it is possible to change; and let go of anything that compromises that belief.”
