“My goal is to deliver treatment which gives a patient hope and direction for the future, which is at the core of why someone comes here.”
Marie Antoinette Handler, M.D., is the first point of contact for patients entering Silver Hill Hospital. Her ability as a psychiatrist to carefully evaluate their needs, connect with them, and hear their stories is crucial to their care, she says.
“I try,” Dr. Handler says, “to make patients comfortable, attend to their immediate needs – whether they’re in withdrawal, or they’re anxious, or there is some immediate medical need – and just try to keep them as comfortable as possible through the admissions process so I can create a strong foundation going forward for their treatment.”
Dr. Handler says that “the more information I can gather from patients in my evaluation, the more integrated I can make their treatment.”
She knows when she has made a connection with patients, Dr. Handler says, when she “sees a sense of anxiety lift off of them, when I see them start to think that this is actually going to be helpful.”
