Dr. Gerber will describe a framework for understanding therapeutic action in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and then relate this to a neuroscientific understanding of these changes, based on MRI research.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe contemporary social cognitive neuroscience research that is relevant to our understanding of how the brain changes in response to core components of psychoanalytic psychotherapy interventions including: exposure and response prevention, alteration of relationship representations, and restructuring of narratives.
  2. Discuss and evaluate the evidence for the role of these psychoanalytic psychotherapy interventions in a broad range of psychotherapeutic approaches.
  3. Review new approaches for using neuroimaging to study how to tailor psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic interventions to individual patients.
