Virtual Grand Rounds: Integrated Behavioral Health Care: Models and Outcomes of Care

Presented by:

Professor Emerita, Fairfield University, Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies
President, American Psychiatric Nurses Association

Approximately one in four adults experiences some form of mental illness (MI) in a given year. The majority receive assistance from providers outside of behavioral health specialties, particularly in primary care settings. Those with severe forms of MI face an increased risk of serious medical co-morbidities and significantly shorter life spans than the general population. Experts have increasingly called for the integration of behavioral and physical health care to more effectively treat mental, substance-use, and general health problems. This presentation will offer an overview of the origins and development of integrated behavioral health care (IBHC) in the US, the current definition of IBHC and existing models, related outcomes of care, and workforce issues.

Educational Objectives: As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the origins of integrated behavioral health care (IBHC).
  2. Discuss the benefits and outcomes of care related to specific models of IBHC.
