Virtual Grand Rounds: Social Media Use in Adolescents

Discuss the effects of social media on adolescents — both the positive connections that are formed, as well as problematic use behavior and disorders. In this Grand Rounds, Dr. Ortiz-Schwartz will be reviewing relevant literature, including sociological and academic research; utilizing clinical case examples; and discussing best practices that clinicians can incorporate to address and provide support to both youth and their families in managing problem use.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the various types of social media and how they specifically affect adolescents’ mood and behaviors
  2. Identify when social media use becomes problematic and contributes to disordered use and behaviors
  3. Define strategies to assess and support teenagers and their families in managing their social media use
