Aging is the greatest single risk factor for cognitive decline. In recent years, we have seen life expectancy increasing as well as dramatic growth in technology, which can both accelerate and decelerate the rate of decline and everyday functioning. This presentation will review the impact of new technology on older adults and how it can protect brain health or worsen it.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe how technology use can worsen attention, become addictive, contribute to multitasking, and cause other mental problems
  2. Discuss apps and programs that improve cognitive performance and other mental abilities, increase independence, reduce social isolation, and monitor health
  3. Explain strategies that mitigate the negative impact of technology on older adults
