Dr. Miller will describe the development of motivational interviewing as a way for helping professionals to have conversations with clients in order to strengthen their own motivation for and commitment to change. He will also summarize his review with Dr. Theresa Moyers of 70 years of psychotherapy research on what distinguishes therapists whose clients have significantly better (or worse) outcomes, and the relationship of these characteristics to motivational interviewing.

Educational Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
1. Explain the Evoking process in motivational interviewing and how it differs from Engaging, Focusing and Planning
2. Describe the expected effect of doing a decisional balance with people who are ambivalent
3. Define at least four characteristics of therapists whose clients have better outcomes regardless of the school of psychotherapy
