COVID infections may impact physiological processes (brain, endocrine, autoimmune, etc.) that lead to changes in behavior requiring psychiatric intervention. We will focus on exacerbation of preexisting psychiatric vulnerability, induction of new pathological states, and possible changes in the patterns of illness seen in clinics, psychiatric hospitals, and consultation services.

The present state of knowledge on how COVID infections may impact the Central Nervous system, and more specifically the role of disruption of hippocampal circuits by immunological reactions resulting in profound behavioral disruptions, will be discussed. We will focus on the specifics of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) and the need to develop more effective clinical interventions. The particular challenges to the organization and functioning of psychiatric hospitals will be reviewed and discussed with Dr. Mark Russ.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe various short and long term sequalae of COVID infections in psychiatric practice
  2. Describe the complexity of symptoms that may appear in Long COVID Syndromes
  3. Evaluate the possible underlying pathophysiology of these behavioral states
  4. Discuss possible effective interventions in the treatment of COVID related dysregulation in Psychiatric patients
  5. Discuss particular challenges to psychiatric services dealing with patients during the pandemic and its sequelae
