Workers in psychiatric settings are exposed more frequently to violence and consequences include physical and mental health problems as well as negative organizational outcomes including low morale, job stress, turnover, and absenteeism. Aggression measures representing events on the entire continuum of aggression including successful de-escalation is critical to guiding practice improvement. Understanding team strengths in intervening by quantifying characteristics of successfully resolved aggressive events offers a unique perspective on the important work done to prevent aggression and the need for containment. Collaborative work by teams on inpatient units provide opportunities to improve practices that prevent aggression exposure in workers and better support worker health.
Educational Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
- Identify current evidence related to the effects of aggression exposure on clinician health in the inpatient psychiatric setting.
- Identify ways to quantify success in de-escalation of aggression and use this information to improve practice.
- Discuss priority needs for education, safety protocols and unit based collaboration to develop a plan for proactive practices to intervene and support workers in managing aggressive behavior.
