Virtual Grand Rounds: Translational Neuroscience of Addiction Psychiatry: From Rats to the 2×4 Model

This presentation will describe basic science research that has characterized the bidirectional causal relationships and overlapping brain mechanisms that interlink mental illness and addiction. This neuroscience of addiction psychiatry is then translated into a new approach for integrated mental health and addiction care, professional training and infrastructure development described by the 2×4 Model.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe addiction pathogenesis in the brain and how this disease process interactions bidirectionally with mental illness.
  2. Discuss how this neuroscience translates to an evidence- based model of integrated addiction psychiatry care, exemplified by the 2 x4 Model design.
  3. Develop interest in becoming a part of the revitalized integrated dual diagnosis movement.
