Virtual Grand Rounds: Calming Flashbacks and Frenzy: De-escalating Post-traumatic and Dissociative Crises

Presented by: Emily E. Haas, MD

Director of the Triumph Program

Silver Hill Hospital

This lecture will teach about how to de-escalate a post-traumatic or dissociative crisis. We will first discuss factors than can cause an individual to be vulnerable to a post-traumatic or dissociative crisis, such as: trauma cues, trauma responses, and a narrow window of tolerance. We will explore how to differentiate a post-traumatic or dissociative crisis from other emotional or behavioral episodes by understanding the influence of flashbacks. Next, we will cover how you can impact a crisis positively or negatively. We will then discuss general principles in the management of post-traumatic and dissociative crises, followed by a review of specific symptom management skills you can use to de-escalate a crisis. Lastly, we will discuss some case examples of how these skills can be implemented to take a frenzied crisis to a state of calm.
