“Patients were back and forth, back and forth into different spaces and the waiting room,” she says. “It’s a very emotionally difficult time for families and patients. The new building offers the opportunity for people to talk in private. It’s a nicer environment.”
The Sigurd Ackerman, MD Center for Evaluation and Admissions has two private rooms for evaluation and two separate waiting rooms for patients and their families. The first floor of the building also features
a garden courtyard with a fountain and benches, rain chimes along
the entranceway, spacious and comfortable lobby, modern fixtures throughout and a blood lab, which had previously been located off site.
The second level houses a state-of- the-art call center, conference room, Family Resources Room, overnight doctor’s quarters and Silver Hill’s Business Revenue Cycle department.
“It’s the first thing that patients see so it made so much sense,” Marie Antoinette “Mia” Handler, MD, Director of Psychiatry, says.
The new accommodations have also quickened the admissions process and now takes significantly less time than before.
“It’s important that when we introduce patients to the hospital we do so with a welcoming and light and warm space,” Dr. Andrew Gerber, President and Medical Director
of Silver Hill, says. “It should feel like home so patients feel taken care of. It’s nobody’s best day of
the year when they are coming in
to be admitted here so it’s all the more important that we make it as comfortable as possible.”
Dr. Gerber says it is equally important for families and friends to get a favorable first impression of the
hospital as they are entrusting the care of their loved ones to us.
The Admissions Building is named after Dr. Sigurd Ackerman, who served as president and medical director at Silver Hill from 2003 to 2017. Several building improvements took place during Ackerman’s tenure, but the Admissions Building was the only new construction.
