MAINTAINING STRENGTH IN TIMES OF STRESS
“I THINK THIS PANDEMIC IS GOING TO BE WITH US FOR A LONG TIME, AND PEOPLE ARE GOING TO NEED OUR HELP. ONCE THINGS START TO CALM DOWN, EVEN A LITTLE, AND PEOPLE STOP THINKING ABOUT IT, THAT’S WHEN YOU SEE ALL THE OTHER PROBLEMS. WE’RE READY TO HELP.” – DR. STEPHEN N. XENAKIS, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RESILIENCE CAMPAIGN AT SILVER HILL HOSPITAL
COVID has had a dramatic impact on the mental health of many Americans. Only a few months into the pandemic, 40 percent of adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use. Silver Hill Hospital has seen many patients seeking relief from pandemic-related disorders such as stress, depression, anxiety and substance misuse.
The Community Resiliency Campaign at Silver Hill Hospital launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure doctors, nurses and other frontline medical workers remained mentally resilient to perform their lifesaving work.
As the pandemic continued, it became clear that the
mental health effects of the virus would continue for years, and other professions needed support as well. Today, the CRC offers in-person and virtual resiliency coaching to first responders, school personnel, community leaders, and staff at nonprofit organizations.
The coaching is tailored to each audience and covers topics such as having a resilient mindset, motivation, self-care and regulation, and values and character.
“We recognized early in the pandemic that frontline medical personnel were under tremendous stress, and many would need help to perform their jobs at a high level,” Silver Hill Hospital President and Medical Director Andrew J. Gerber, M.D., Ph.D.,
