says. “As the crisis evolved in unexpected ways, the dynamic CRC team expanded its focus to address the unmet needs of so many essential workers. As a leader in the field, it is our duty to identify and address potential widespread mental health challenges to keep the community flourishing.”
Dr. Stephen Xenakis is the director of the CRC and approached Dr. Gerber about the idea just weeks into the pandemic. A retired Army brigadier general, Dr. Xenakis knows very well the importance of resilience in times of chaos and persistent uncertain times. He had trained soldiers during the Vietnam War on how to prepare for the unknown and deal with the accompanying stress. He brings a similar
disciplined mindset to the CRC.
“There are groups that clearly need and want help,” Dr. Xenakis says. “I’m glad we have been able to support them and continue to do so.”
Terra Reed, RN, is the CRC operations manager. She has extensive experience working with veterans as well as within the mental health field. Resilience Coach Matt DeBernardis, a certified Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) instructor with experience training Army soldiers in psychological skill building, facilitates the sessions.
The CRC has been funded by generous gifts from Silver Hill Hospital supporters.
