CHRISTY (RIGHT) AND HER SISTER LIZ
She was running out of options. Christy needed a miracle. She found it in Silver Hill Hospital. With her sister’s help, Christy discovered the Silver Hill website and the opportunity for financial assistance. A few phone calls later, Christy was set for admission and to receive financial aid.
Christy started to feel better almost immediately after checking in. She spent one night at the inpatient unit before settling in at River House, one of Silver Hill’s seven residential homes.
“The assistance I received right away was overwhelmingly compassionate,” she says. “At Silver Hill, even at the assessment, I felt like I was starting to be me again. I’m still Christy, that hasn’t changed. I was treated as a person with an illness, rather than an illness within a person.”
Christy could not be more grateful for the staff at Silver Hill as well as her fellow River House residents. She is also grateful for Silver Hill’s supporters. Silver Hill is a nonprofit organization and relies on philanthropic gifts to help people like Christy.
“You are giving the gift of life,” she says. “You are giving those who do not see a future for themselves the ability to see a future. You are giving hope and life.”
Christy has returned to work and is back in her apartment. She has good days and bad days but now realizes it is OK to have bad days. Depression and anxiety, she says, do not have to control her life. When she starts to feel down, she thinks of Silver Hill and the staff and friends she met there. She thinks of meditating by the fireplace at River House.
She is in a better place and is thankful for the miracle that is Silver Hill.
“If it weren’t for my sister getting me into Silver Hill and for the wonderful people at Silver Hill, I would not be here today,” Christy says. “I really believe that. I don’t know what would have happened. I hope I wouldn’t have taken my life, but I honestly don’t know. I had been in such a dark place. Silver Hill gave me my life back. It gave me the ability to love myself.”
