“I am amazed, still to this day, by how life changing and powerful the correct treatment and skills can be for someone who has survived trauma..”

As Director of the Silver Hill Hospital Trauma Program, Emily E. Haas, MD holds a role aligned with her education, expertise, and passion.

Dr. Haas joined Silver Hill in 2022 to help patients with trauma and dissociative disorders and to build a transitional living program offering the highest level of care to individuals who have survived severe traumas. Dr. Haas first developed interest in the treatment of complex trauma and dissociative disorders during her residency at The University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt Psychiatry Residency Program and has been committed to the field since that time.

“During my residency, I was introduced to trauma and dissociative disorders in depth for the first time. I was struck by the prevalence of trauma in our society, and by the bravery and adaptability of the survivors,” explains Dr. Haas. “I was also drawn to the highly specialized treatment modalities and the criticality of providing a safe setting for patients to recover from what they have endured. I am amazed, still to this day, by how life changing and powerful the correct treatment and skills can be for someone who has survived trauma.  This is why I find it essential to be involved in the education and training of mental health professionals so that there are more providers qualified to identify and help these individuals who have already suffered a considerable amount.”

Since her arrival at Silver Hill, Dr. Haas has served as an attending psychiatrist working in the DBT/DBT-S Transitional Living Program while developing the Transitional Living Program for the treatment of trauma. She has also created and led a weekly trauma skills group for patients with trauma. She has concentrated on educating trainees and other clinicians at Silver Hill on the treatment of complex trauma and dissociative disorders to expand the number of providers available to treat these conditions. Dr. Haas has led grand rounds, created psychiatry residency curriculums, and conducted both national presentations and local workshops on these topics.

Dr. Haas came to Silver Hill Hospital from Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Maryland, where she served as Co-Service Chief of the Trauma Disorders Unit, working with a multidisciplinary team and trainees to provide treatment to patients with complex trauma and dissociative disorders from across the world.
