“My impact on patients is through creating as much change, growth and development as possible while they are here.”
Creating positive change through group and individual therapy sessions is the focus of Micaela Scully, LCSW, the licensed social worker and therapist in the Trauma Program.
Micaela makes her mark on patients by “developing a strong therapeutic relationship, developing trust and building rapport, as quickly as possible.” It’s not always easy to do, she says, but she finds success through empathy, understanding and being non-judgmental.
Besides group and individual therapy sessions for the Trauma Track, as well as an LGBTQ group session for the campus at large, Micaela also does family support, discharge planning, and treatment planning in consultation with the unit’s multidisciplinary team.
Another contributor to change and growth, says Micaela, is close consultation with her patients. “I work very collaboratively with my patients on what their goals are. They are not passive recipients of treatment, but very active and collaborative participants who feel respected.”
