Home for the Holidays

Silver Hill Hospital

The holidays are quickly approaching and many parents are eager to have their children home from college, but the son or daughter they dropped off in August may not seem like the same one that returns for the holiday season.

College, especially freshman year, is often the first time that kids experience true independence. This new-found freedom can make for a bumpy road when they come home for an extended visit. While it’s normal to observe different behaviors in your children such as staying up late, sleeping late, or rebelling against house rules, it’s important to know when behaviors cross the line and may be warning signs of drug abuse or mental illness like depression or bipolar disorder.

Signs of mental illness include noticeable changes in school performance, prolonged negative mood and attitude and abuse of alcohol and/or drugs. Signs of substance use include withdrawal from family and friends, deteriorated physical appearance sudden mood changes and periods of agitation and/or hyperactivity.

Review the in-depth list warning signs for mental illness and substance abuse so you know what to watch out for.

Keep in mind, if one or two of these signs are observed, you shouldn’t jump to conclusions; some changes in behavior are normal. It’s when they become more extreme that there may be cause for concern. If problem behavior persists for an extended period, it’s time to speak to your son or daughter, express your concerns and encourage them to see a mental health professional (psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker) for an evaluation. When detected early, problem behaviors can be easier to treat and may prevent years of suffering later in life.
