How Treatment During the Holidays Can Bring More Meaning

As the director of Silver Hill Hospital’s Resilience Program at River House, I know this time of year can intensify symptoms for people living with personality and mood disorders, as well as other mental health challenges. The holidays can also trigger unresolved family and trauma issues.
That’s why I strongly encourage patients not to wait until January to seek help. Starting treatment now, during the holidays, can make the season more manageable and, contrary to what many may think, more meaningful. It provides structure during a chaotic season.
The idea of entering treatment during the holidays can feel daunting. Many people worry they’ll miss out on important moments or traditions. But what I see is that the structure and support of treatment offer what patients need during this season. Our residential program is designed to help individuals regulate emotions, reduce self-destructive patterns, and build healthier relationships.
Entering treatment does not mean being cut off from loved ones, as we try to accommodate day passes during major holidays so patients can spend time off campus with loved ones if clinically appropriate. These visits often become more meaningful because patients feel supported and more capable of engaging with family in healthy ways.
Another advantage of seeking treatment during this time is the atmosphere at the hospital. The holidays typically create a quieter, more peaceful environment, allowing for deeper connection and personalized care. Patients often receive increased individualized attention, and we incorporate holiday-themed activities when appropriate to keep with the spirit of the season.
If you are struggling or feeling stressed, do not wait until after the holidays to seek treatment. Beginning treatment now at Silver Hill Hospital can help you get through the holiday season and set the foundation for a stronger start to the year ahead.
