Silver Hill Hospital’s Patient Financial Aid Fund Makes Quality Psychiatric Care Affordable

Cost remains one of the main reasons people with mental health or addiction disorders do not seek the treatment they need. Silver Hill Hospital’s Patient Financial Aid Fund removes that barrier.
The program helps address the growing mental health crisis in the United States, serving as a lifeline for patients who otherwise may have to forego high-quality mental health and addiction treatment. This financial assistance is available for inpatient and residential care at Silver Hill, one of the premier psychiatric hospitals in the country.
Silver Hill currently awards about $1 million in financial assistance each year. We want to do even more and have a goal of awarding $2 million annually by 2029.
High-quality mental health care, such as that offered by Silver Hill, is expensive. Financial aid makes it accessible for those who otherwise could not afford it.
The impact of the Patient Financial Aid Fund is clear. It transforms and even saves lives. The ripple effect of the program is extraordinary, improving the lives of families, friends, and employers. Several recipients of financial awards from Silver Hill have gone on to work in the mental health field themselves, helping others on their recovery journey.
Silver Hill recently held an event celebrating the impact of the Patient Financial Aid Fund. The well-attended gathering included speeches by recipients of the assistance, family members of recipients, and donors who support the fund.
Nate received financial assistance from Silver Hill in 2019. Before treatment, his depression, anxiety, and abuse of opioids made him feel as if he went to sleep one night and never woke up; that would be OK. Financial assistance allowed Nate to enter residential treatment for four weeks. He came out with a changed perspective on life, stopped using drugs, healed his relationship with his family, and now works as a peer recovery support specialist.
“I was as low as you can get,” Nate says. “Now, I’m helping others see there is a better way forward. The financial assistance and treatment at Silver Hill saved me.”
Sarah spoke of the impact the assistance had on her family, including her twin infant daughters. Her husband, Nick, was addicted to alcohol, and Sarah did not see a future with him in it. Even Nickadmitted that there was a high possibility that he would “end up dead in a ditch” some night.
After a short inpatient stay, Nick received financial assistance to enter a residential program at Silver Hill. The treatment gave Nick the foundation to sustain sobriety and become an equal partner in the marriage and raising of his twin girls, who are now 2 years old.
“Our daughters have a dad who is sober, present, and loving,” Sarah said. “And I have a husband and partner here with me. I wasn’t sure I would be able to say that.”
Silver Hill Hospital strongly believes that quality mental health care should be accessible to all who need it. The Patient Financial Aid Fund is one way we make that possible.
