The powerful bidirectional relationship between metabolism and brain health has been well documented. Neurologists have demonstrated convincingly that the ketogenic diet is a powerful intervention for medication resistant epilepsy and often can be curative. The mechanisms for how this works are remarkably well elucidated by neuroscientists. In recent years, the evidence for using metabolic interventions in serious mental illnesses has been building. This talk will review the rationale as well as scientific and clinical evidence for mental health clinicians working to understand and focus on the metabolic health of their patients with serious mental illnesses.
Educational Objectives:
As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the bidirectional relationship between metabolic health and brain health, focusing on the mechanisms by which metabolism affects mental health symptoms
- Review the evidence for metabolic interventions, including ketogenic diets and exercise, in the management of serious mental illnesses
- Discuss the interventions that clinicians can employ in their practices today that leverage these important insights to improve outcomes
