Reducing Alcohol Problems in Young Drinkers: A Focus on Genetic Predisposition

Presented by:

Marc A. Schuckit, MD
Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry
University of California, San Diego Medical School

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is strongly influenced by genetics. A common ‘genetically influenced’ characteristic that contributes to the risk for AUD is a low response to alcohol resulting in the need for a high number of drinks to achieve the desired effects. This characteristic is typically visible early in the drinking career; identifying it can be used to help prevent the future development of AUD.

This presentation reviews data from a 45-year prospective study that identified the relevance of a low response to alcohol to future alcohol use disorder and presents the results of a program that successfully decreased heavy drinking and alcohol problems in individuals demonstrating low alcohol response in their late teens.

Educational Objectives:

As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Analyze the data demonstrating that genes contribute to the development of alcohol problems
  2. Explain how complex genetically influenced disorders operate
  3. Discuss how information on genes and the environment contribute to the risk for alcohol problems and can be used for prevention
