Virtual Grand Rounds: New Pharmacotherapy for Psychosis

Description:
This talk will review new pharmacological approaches to treating people with psychotic illness. This will include both drugs in development and recently approved drugs. Attention will be focused on new mechanisms for treating psychosis including muscarinic and TAAR1 agonists. The combination drug, xanomeline-trospium will be reviewed including published data on its efficacy and side effects. Other medications to be described will be drugs in development for treating cognition, negative symptoms, and medications for patients who are treatment resistant.
Educational Objectives: As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the effects of muscarinic antipsychotics on brain targets
- Recall the side effects and effectiveness of new drugs for schizophrenia
- Describe the mechanism of action of new drugs for treating cognitive impairment in schizophrenia
