Virtual Grand Rounds: Pharmacotherapy of Personality Disorders

Presented by:

Michael Gitlin, MD

Distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Geffen School of Medicine at UCLADirector, Adult Division of Psychiatry
Director, Mood Disorders Clinic

Patients with prominent personality disorder features, especially those with borderline personality disorder, are frequently treated with medications, often many medications. Yet, little attention has been given to the theoretical rationale for psychopharmacological treatment of these patients. This talk will review the difficulties in research in this area, explore the theoretical rationales for pharmacotherapy and then comprehensively review the data supporting (or not) pharmacotherapy for patients with personality disorders.
