MBT Basic Training Course
This is a knowledge-and skills-based course in Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) for adults. The course provides participants with a solid conceptual understanding of mentalizing, its relevance to clinical problems associated with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), complex trauma and other mental health difficulties, alongside the clinical skills required to deliver MBT to a defined standard of competency.

MBT is an evidence-based therapy for BPD and ASPD and offers a stepped training pathway, progressing from basic training to practitioner and supervisor levels. There are three core training components:

  • Basic Training Course
  • Supervision with an MBT Supervisor
  • Certificate Course at Practitioner Level

By the end of the MBT Basic Training course, participants will be able to:

  • Recall the developmental origins of mentalizing, its research base, and its relevance to personality and psychological functioning and social adaptation
  • Apply mentalizing concepts in clinical practice to support further skill development
  • Develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement mentalization-based treatment in individual therapy
  • Recognize unique characteristics of mentalization-based group therapy

Conference Agenda:

Monday, June 1, 2026

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM
Breakfast and Check-In

9:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Session 1: Introduction to Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT) Conceptual Foundations
Presenters: Peter Fonagy/Anthony Bateman
CE Credits: 3.50
Overview of MBT including developmental origins and the generation of epistemic trust. Attachment and mentalizing are discussed and their clinical applications leading to discussion of structure and organization of MBT.

1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Session 2: Mentalizing Clinical Stance
Presenters: Anthony Bateman /Robert Drozek /Peter Fonagy
CE Credits: 2.50
A ‘mentalizing’ or ‘not-knowing stance’ is the foundation of effective MBT. Participants will differentiate this stance from other therapeutic stances and practice the stance. The use of the non-knowing stance in creating an agreed focus for treatment, the mentalizing formulation, will be outlined and practiced.

Tuesday, June 2, 2026

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM
Breakfast and Check-In

9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
Session 3: Mentalizing Process and Empathic Validation
Presenters: Anthony Bateman/Peter Fonagy/Robert Drozek
CE Credits: 1.5
Generating and facilitating mentalizing as a core therapeutic process requires the clinician to monitor mentalizing in themselves and their client throughout the sessions. Creating the context and ‘atmosphere’ for mentalizing to flourish requires the clinician to see the client’s perspective first and then for the client to consider the therapist’s perspective. This creates an interactive mentalizing process. The importance of managing the dialogue, creating contrary moves, and empathic validation will be discussed.

11:00 AM – 3:00 PM (with 1 hr for lunch)
Session 4: Ineffective Mentalizing Modes
Presenters: Anthony Bateman /Robert Drozek/Peter Fonagy
CE Credits: 3
Recognizing ineffective mentalizing modes is essential. These will be defined and examples given from everyday clinical practice. How to intervene in ineffective mentalizing will be outlined and practiced.

3:15 PM – 4:00 PM
Session 5: Mentalizing an Affective Narrative (continues Wed)
Presenters: Anthony Bateman/Robert Drozek/Peter Fonagy
People with personality disorder and complex trauma are tormented by painful mental states dominated by ineffective mentalizing narratives about themselves and others. The narratives need to become mentalized narratives. Once mentalizing is more stable, the affective narratives the client brings about themselves and their relationships can be mentalized and thereby become less painful. Examples will be taken from clients who self-harm and are suicidal or violent – behaviors that arise from non-mentalized narratives. How to change them into mentalized narratives will be discussed and practiced.

Wednesday, June 3, 2026

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM
Breakfast and Check-In

9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Session 5: Mentalizing an Affective Narrative (continued from Tuesday)
CE Credits: 1.75
Presenters: Anthony Bateman/Robert Drozek/Peter Fonagy

10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (with 1 hr for lunch)
Session 6: Mentalizing Relationships and Clinical Adaptations
Presenters: Peter Fonagy/Robert Drozek/Anthony Bateman
CE Credits: 5
Relationships are problematic in clients with BPD and complex PTSD. Mentalizing the relationship between the therapist and client as evidenced in sessions and between the client and others in their social / interpersonal world is essential if ‘antisocial’ or ineffective and problematic relationships are to become prosocial and more satisfying and constructive. How to mentalize relationships will be discussed and illustrated and participants will practice this. Clinical adaptations of mentalizing relationships and mentalizing interventions will also be introduced.
