Virtual Grand Rounds: Understanding Pharmacological Management of Treatment Refractory Mood Disorders

Presented by:

Joseph Goldberg, MD

Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai

This presentation will describe strategies for clinical decision-making in the assessment and management of treatment-refractory mood disorders. The roles of moderators and mediators, probabilistic versus deterministic analyses, comorbidities, and generalizability from the clinical trials literature will be described in relation to crafting tailored, evidence-based pharmacotherapy regimens for an individual patient.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify patient-specific moderators and mediators of pharmacotherapy response, and probabilistic versus deterministic elements of treatment outcome in difficult-to-treat mood disorders.
  2. Devise patient-specific sequential pharmacotherapy trial algorithms using conjoint analysis, pro-con assessments, and decision analytic matrices.
  3. Recognize evidence-based pharmacotherapy strategies for difficult-to-treat forms of major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder.
