This presentation examines the evolution of the concept of emerging adulthood as first delineated by Jeffrey Arnett in 2000. Specific cultural conditions, new family constellations, and the role of the digital revolution will be highlighted. In addition, the changing view of adulthood, the impact on identity development, and the associated instability in young people between the ages of 18 and 30 will be discussed.

1. Identify the five features of emerging adulthood as originally named by Arnett
2. Explain the epidemiological shift and the cultural changes that set the stage for this new developmental phase
3. Discuss the changing nature of identity development, the role of youth culture, and the new meanings of adulthood in contemporary society
