In the Time article, “When Did It Become So Hard to Make Plans With Friends?”, Jeff Katzman, MD, Director of Silver Hill Academy for Research and Education (SHARE), shares insights on friendship drawn from his extensive study of human relationships. 

Dr. Katzman emphasizes that healthy friendship isn’t about keeping score. Reciprocity matters, but it doesn’t mean each person must contribute in exactly the same way. One friend may initiate plans more often, while another may show up in different ways.  

As Dr. Katzman puts it, we don’t have to say “Yes” to Tuesday night, but somehow, over time, we need to say “Yes” to the relationship.
