A recent New York Times article (October 21, 2025) highlights a comprehensive international study published in The Lancet that analyzed how 30 antidepressants differentially impact cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight over short-term treatment.

The research pooled data from 151 clinical trials involving 58,000 participants, revealing distinct physical side effects across medications.  This information can help doctors and their patients select the best option.

Andrew J. Gerber, MD, President and Medical Director of Silver Hill Hospital, says the study is the most thorough review of its kind. He emphasized that while the findings provide valuable guidance on the varied physiological effects of antidepressants, the health risks of untreated depression considerably outweigh these manageable side effects.
