LGBTQ+ hotlines experience influx in crisis calls amid 2024 presidential election
LGBTQ+ crisis hotlines, including The Trevor Project and Crisis Text Line, have seen a sharp increase in calls and messages during the 2024 presidential election. Since Election Day, The Trevor Project reported a 125% surge in contact volume, particularly regarding election-related concerns. The rise in outreach highlights growing anxiety within the LGBTQ+ community, especially with fears about future legislation and increased political discourse.
Elizabeth Ortiz-Schwartz, MD, DFAPA, Adolescent Psychiatrist at Silver Hill Hospital, is dedicated to ensuring that vulnerable LGBTQ+ individuals remain connected to essential mental health resources during these challenging times.
“Previously, there was a better sense of fitting in and having a supportive environment in schools in other settings, but now they feel that they cannot trust their peers and other adults to be supportive of their needs.”
