Although suicides are infrequent in the practice of mental health professionals, they can be very troubling when they occur. After reviewing the prevalence of suicide in clinical practice, this talk will focus on the typical psychological reactions of mental health professionals to patient suicides, predictors of more intense psychological reactions to patient suicide, and optimal methods of coping with patient suicide.
