Virtual Grand Rounds: The Emotional System in the Natural World and in the Human Family

Presentation Date:
October 9, 2024
Anne McKnight, EdD, LCSW, Director Emerita, The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family discusses how each of three species, bees, trees, and chimpanzees, comprise a natural system that includes communication, defense, provisioning resources, procreation, and nurturance of the young, and decision making. These evolutionary attributes comprise the emotional system of the species. The human family as an emotional system will be presented in Part 2, in which the adaptation of a family to challenges is traced across four generations. The emotional system of a human family includes the same characteristics of other species, although regulated by emotional patterns particular to each family.
Educational Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
- Describe what characteristics comprise the emotional system in the natural world.
- Discuss how the emotional system exists in non-human and human species.
- Explain the four emotional patterns of the human family.
- Illustrate how the human family evolved as a system related to other species.
