Problems of emotional health and substance use in adulthood typically have deep roots in early childhood. This presentation presents concepts and research from developmental science that inform a new model of mental healthcare. It will offer a perspective on the term “trauma-informed care” that is grounded in developmental processes and relational health. Centered around the power of mismatch and repair and playing in the uncertainty it will show how the very messiness of relationships offers a path to growth and healing.
Educational Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:
Describe the role of mismatch and repair in healthy and derailed infant development.
Recognize the value of working from a stance of not-knowing.
Define trauma-informed care from the perspective of meaning making in relationships.
