Virtual Grand Rounds: Collaborative Care: Conflict Management with Patients, Families, and Professional Colleagues
Presented by:

Professor Florida Atlantic University-Boca Raton
Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work
Conflict is a natural and inevitable part of interpersonal interaction. Accordingly, it comes as no surprise that health and mental health professionals may experience significant conflicts when working with patients, family members, and professional colleagues. Conflict situations may arise due to differences in values and interests, miscommunications, or emotional responses to stressful situations including illness and other healthcare challenges. While conflict itself is not inherently good or bad, how we respond to conflict affects the quality of our working relationships and patient outcomes.
This session will equip participants with constructive strategies for managing various types of conflict that arise in everyday practice. Attendees will explore conflict styles, learn how to facilitate mutual empathy, and discover how to help people shift from entrenched positions to underlying needs and interests. This session will also introduce methods for generating creative options for mutual gain and using objective criteria to build consensus around treatment and care options. To demonstrate how these strategies may be incorporated in practice, this session will feature a live simulation of these strategies in action.
