How Design Thinking can Transform Your Practice and Your Life

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” -Maimonides

Summary

The discussion will focus on three phases of Design Thinking and creative problem solving, the very process Silicon Valley innovators use to solve the issues they face.  This Grand Rounds is designed to enable you (the audience) to turn those same tools on the very problems that you are trying to answer.  We will dissect cases that succinctly illustrate those principals.  We will use simple frame shifting to radically change how to conceptualize a problem.  The format will be a lecture style, however, the time will be very interactive, engaging and fun, because that is how we learn best.  My objective isn’t to solve your problem for you, or wow you with some cool idea that, while fun, has little applicability to your life.  Ultimately, it is to give you the tools to dramatically improve your ability to solve the problem yourself.

Learning objectives

  1. Understand the phases of the Design Thinking Process.
  2. Discuss how Design Thinking can be applied to clinical practice.
  3. Be able to identify techniques for understanding the problem.
  4. Demonstrate some tools to increase creative problem solving.
  5. Understand the basics of prototyping and what purpose it serves.
