Recognizing Dissociative Defenses in the Dreams of Patients and How to Work with Them

Presented by:
Donald E. Kalsched, PhD
Jungian Psychoanalyst
Early unremembered trauma frequently enters adult patient dreams in the form of violent agencies attacking vulnerable parts of the inner world. This theme often emerges as the new attachment relationship with the therapist begins to ‘trigger’ the early ‘primitive agonies’ that have been impossible to feel and remain in the psyche as a “fear of breakdown” (Winnicott) — a breakdown that has already happened. Handling these delicate transference ‘moments’ is an important part of trauma work.
Educational Objectives:
As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the signs of early trauma in later dreams
- Discuss what Winnicott means by “Fear of Breakdown”
- Compare early trauma dreams from later more ‘formulated’ dreams
