Resistance as a Psychosocial Event: Psychosocial Resources and the Fear of Hope

Presented by:

Ross Ellenhorn, PhD
CEO/Owner Ellenhorn, LLC

This session addresses the vital importance of psychosocial resources in a person’s motivation to change and their ability to access and metabolize care. We explore how connection, purpose, self-efficacy, and self-worth shape a person’s readiness for treatment, and discuss how these resources intersect with Dr. Ellenhorn’s research on the Fear of Hope, a distinct psychological state in which past disappointments make the prospect of hoping again feel too risky. Together, these insights offer a new lens for understanding ambivalence, engagement, and what it truly means to support meaningful change.

Educational Objectives:

As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Learn to see resistance and the ability to accept and use help as dynamic, and connected to what is happening for a person socially
  2. Understand both the importance of hope in all motivation, and how fear of hope, especially in psychiatric patients, can disturb hope’s purpose of moving us forward
