Treatment resistant schizophrenia refers to the proportion of schizophrenia patients who continue to have symptoms and poor outcomes despite treatment. We will take a careful look at how this is defined, such as failure of different antipsychotics, neuroimaging, and neurobiological characteristics of treatment resistant schizophrenia. We further review the current treatment strategies available, including medication combinations, and psychotherapies. We conclude by highlighting common barriers to early diagnosis and treatment in young adults.
