Depression and Anxiety in Later Life

Presented by:

James M. Ellison, MD, MPH

Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University

Anxiety and depression are the most common psychiatric disorders affecting older adults. Although they carry the same names as disorders seen in younger adults, anxiety and depression can appear differently in later life (age 50+). Presentation, evaluation, treatment choices, effectiveness of management, and maintenance treatment decisions are all affected by age considerations. In this discussion, we will review the characteristic presentations of late life anxiety and depressive disorders, highlighting how their recognition and management differ from the same disorders in younger adults.
