Virtual Grand Rounds: Intimate Partner Violence: Inquiry, Evaluation, and Response in the Clinical Setting

Presented by: Elaine Alpert, MD, MPH

Faculty of Medicine

University of British Columbia

Intimate partner violence (IPV) — a major contributor to morbidity and mortality — is seen in nearly every healthcare setting. Healthcare providers are often the first and sometimes the only professionals whom survivors may encounter, and thus can play a pivotal role in identification, assessment, intervention, and prevention. This presentation will provide an overview of IPV for health professionals in clinical practice, focusing on physical and mental health manifestations, along with guidance on inquiry, evaluation, and trauma-informed responses strategies for at-risk and affected patients and clients.

Educational Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the incidence, prevalence, spectrum, dynamics, and clinical manifestations of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).
  2. Explain the principles of trauma-informed care.
  3. Discuss ways to inquire about and respond to disclosures of violence and abuse identified in the clinical setting.
