Virtual Grand Rounds: Pathological Lying: A Case for Inclusion in the DSM

Presented by:

Charles Dike, FRCPsych

Professor and Co-Director Law and Psychiatry Division

Department of Psychiatry

Yale University School of Medicine

Pathological Lying (PL) is a controversial topic, relatively obscure in general discourse until recently. It has, however, been recognized and written about in psychiatric literature for over a century. Prominent and eminent psychiatrists through the years have wondered if PL is a symptom, a disorder, or a behavioral excess. Central to the debate is whether the pathological liar recognizes their lies to be false. Another is whether it is treatable. I will present a definition of PL, including signs and symptoms, review the literature and theories underlying it, present a differential diagnosis, and discuss the implications of PL in clinical and forensic arenas. I will make a case for its inclusion in the DSM.

Educational Objectives
