Virtual Grand Rounds: The Emotional System in the Natural World and in the Human Family

Presented by:

Anne McKnight, EdD, LCSW

Director Emerita

The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family

In Part 1, Dr. McKnight will discuss how each of three species, bees, trees, and chimpanzees, comprise a natural system which includes communication, defense, provisioning resources, procreation, and nurturance of the young, and decision making. These evolutionary attributes comprise the emotional system of the species. The human family as an emotional system will be presented in Part 2, in which the adaptation of a family to challenges is traced across four generations. The emotional system of a human family includes the same characteristics of other species, although regulated by emotional patterns particular to each family.
