Grand Rounds: What are the Roots of Addiction? The Self Medication Hypothesis in Practice

In the current clinical climate of opiate and other prescription drug abuse, Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) is a primary focus. Join two eminent psychiatrists and leaders in the field of treating addictive disorders in a humanistic context. Dr. Santopietro and Dr. Khantzian, will reflect on over eighty years of effective patient care, assessing and treating the roots of addictive disorders. In understanding the Self Medication Hypothesis and its clinical applications, participants will comprehend the healing, engaging and restorative model of seeking long term relief of suffering as the essential goals of treatment.

Educational Objectives:

  2. Understand and be versed in the etiology of addictive disorders according to the observational model of the SMH and modern supportive data found in neuropsychological assessments and brain imaging.
