Can an Experimental Alzheimer’s Drug also Ease Alcohol Withdrawal Damage?

Amy Swift, MD, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Silver Hill Hospital, shared her expertise recently in the Fox News Digital article “Experimental Alzheimer’s drug could reduce alcohol withdrawal damage, researchers say.”
Researchers say the drug, in addition to treating mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, may also ease inflammation in the brain linked to alcohol addiction. The drug has not yet been approved.
While detoxification using medication is a common first step in treating alcohol use disorder, Dr. Swift notes in the article, it has limited impact on one’s long-term drinking habits. She is hopeful that the new Alzheimer’s drug can “meaningfully alter their long-term relationship with alcohol.”
