10:30 am-11:00 am Onset of Illness: The Changing Face of Severe Psychiatric Illness in the early 21st Century presented by Rocco Marotta, MD, PhD
Objective: Recognize the ways in which psychotic patients may present to emergency rooms and psychiatric admission services and the role of exposure to cannabis and stimulants may have in the increase in intensity of symptoms and resistance to usual interventions.
11:00 am-11:45 am Acute ER Psychiatric Hospitalization and “Stabilization” vs. “Appropriate” Treatment panel presented by Rocco Marotta, MD, PhD; Amy Swift, MD; Ryan Wade, MD; and Brent Penque, MD, PhD
Objective: Recognize the ways in which the high incidence rates of cannabis use and stimulant use in young patients exhibiting psychotic symptoms call for longer hospitalization stays in order to stabilize. Discuss the requirement of highly organized and intensive settings to ensure long-term positive outcomes.
11:45 am-12:30 pm The Critical Role of Sub-Acute Residential Care: Clinical Effectiveness versus Cost/Benefit presented by Rocco Marotta, MD, PhD; Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD; Donna Anthony, MD, PhD; and Ryan Wade, MD
Objective: Recognize that sub-acute residential care with an emphasis on maintaining sobriety, ensuring acceptance of long-term medication regimens, and overcoming the tendency of patients to minimize and deny the severity of their illness is critical to the success of any patient care endeavor.

1:30 pm-2:45 pm Legal complications: Personal Autonomy vs. Survival presented by Laura Brancato, JD and Allison Lane, JD
Objective: Define the complexity of legal constraints on patient care and family involvement in processes which may seem absolutely necessary for the successful care of loved ones. Discuss the importance of political advocacy in this arena.

3:00 pm-5:00 pm Long-Term Residential Programs and Family Involvement panel discussion presented by Virgil Stucker; Kristen Weber, MSW, Partners Creating Community; Rachel Stark, Spring Lake Ranch; Amanda Fialk, PhD, LCSW, LICSW, The Dorm; and moderated by Jacqueline Ordoñez, LCSW
Objective: Explain the difference between symptomatic improvement and the long-term positive outcome of living a fuller life through educational and vocational attainment and interpersonal relationships.
