Sharing the Wealth of Knowledge

Silver Hill Hospital

In 2023, Silver Hill Hospital launched SHARE, the Silver Hill Academy for Research and Education.  At its inception, SHARE was both a formalization of existing Silver Hill programs — many long-standing — as well as a commitment to building a significant academic institute with scholarship, education, advocacy, and clinical training as its foundational pillars.  SHARE is led by Director, Jeff Katzman, MD

“Silver Hill Hospital was founded on the principle of helping others,” says Andrew J. Gerber, M.D., Ph.D., President and Medical Director. “Through SHARE, we expand that number exponentially by providing a platform for education and connection.  SHARE extends and informs the work we do at Silver Hill and provides a global network for moving forward together — with others — in real-time.”

Grand Rounds Going Strong

Among the programs that preceded the formation of SHARE in 2023 is the Silver Hill Grand Rounds series, an annual calendar of approximately 20 lectures led by experts across the field. Grand Rounds offer original, important, and fascinating information, as well as continuing education credits to attendees.

Silver Hill has been hosting Grand Rounds for over a quarter-century, but it wasn’t until the Coronavirus pandemic that the series became virtual, and word really got out.

Today, Silver Hill Grand Rounds are presented live via Zoom on select Wednesdays (11:30am – 1:00pm, ET), free of charge. Both speakers and attendees log in from locations both near and far and many regulars attend the full series, inspired by the value, breadth, and ease of access.

The Grand Rounds series is also complemented by in-person workshops, events, and conferences, offering in-depth education and perspectives on topics of relevance.

“Prior to COVID-19,” explains Anne Romano, MLIS, Director of Library Services/CME Coordinator, “Grand Rounds were in person.  We hosted at Silver Hill and in locations across the tristate area, proximal to our guest speakers and to our audience. We drew both internal and external attendees and the lectures were excellent but limited. The impacts of COVID-19 were mostly dreadful, but in the world of Grand Rounds, there was a silver lining.”

Breadth of Offerings

Silver Hill determines Grand Rounds topics through a cross-sectional needs assessment; a survey of current participants; and by research and recognition of important topics in the field.

“By design,” says Dr. Katzman, “we are aiming for topics and themes of relevance and depth, that will build upon each other. Our expectation is that while each Grand Rounds topic is of import on its own, there are learnings and synergies to be gained by attending the full series. At the end of the year, you’ll be surprised by how much you know, and how much it all connects and informs your work.”

Room for All

In early 2024, Silver Hill instituted a new Grand Rounds ‘tradition,’ a trophy for each Grand Rounds presenter who earned a new attendance record at their lecture — the concept being that the trophy would travel cross country to the next victor as the attendance record fell.  There was one issue with the plan — the attendance record is broken regularly, at nearly every presentation. The trophy would never sit still!

“Our attendance grows with each lecture,” says Anne Romano. “We’re buoyed by the fact that Silver Hill Grand Rounds are serving so many participants, repeat attendees are on the rise, and the feedback is purposeful and genuine. And with Zoom, there’s no such thing as standing room only.”
